What type of van do I need to hire to move house?

We all know that moving house can be stressful. On top of this, many people decide to hire a van and move their possessions themselves. This is a great way to save money compared with using a removals service, but let’s face it, it adds to the stress – especially if you don’t use vans regularly. Common questions our customers who are moving house ask us:

  • What type of van do I need to hire to move house?
  • How much load space do I need for a home removal?
  • Do I need to hire a van with a tail lift?

At Falcon Vehicle Solutions we have over 30 years’ experience with helping customers find the right type of van for moving house. Based on our experience, we have created this practical guide to help you with your next van rental. In this article we will cover how much you can fit in which type of van and what kind of UK driving license you require to drive each van.

Removal van size guide

How much can you fit in a …

Small Van

A small van is just that – small. If you are moving house and want to transport many items at once, this is not the van for you. However, if you just need a van to move white goods or a few boxes then a small van could be the right choice. A small van will typically fit up to 10 medium sized boxes, or a standard washing machine plus up to 4 medium sized boxes.

You require a standard UK driving licence to drive a small van.

Small Wheelbase Van (SWB)

A small wheelbase van will typically fit up to 15 medium sized boxes, or a small wardrobe or sofa. This may not be enough load space for an entire house move, but may be something to consider if you need to dispose of items or furniture at a local recycling centre.

You require a standard UK driving licence to drive a small wheelbase van.

Long Wheelbase Van (LWB)

If you are moving house from a studio apartment, you may be able to fit all your items in a long wheelbase van. Typically, these can hold up to 20 medium sized boxes plus the standard furnishings of a studio apartment. This could include a single bed, some chairs and small fridge.

You require a standard UK driving licence to drive a long wheelbase van.

Extra-Long Wheelbase Van (XLWB)

An extra-long wheelbase van will typically fit 20 – 25 medium sized boxes, plus the standard furnishings of a small flat. This could include a standard double bed, 2 seater sofa, fridge freezer and large TV.

You require a standard UK driving licence to drive an extra-long wheelbase van.

3.5t Luton T-lift Van

Many of our customers opt to hire a 3.5t Luton van with a tail lift. You may find this type of van more practical than an XLWB van as it has a tail lift to help with the loading and unloading of bulky items. The van can fit up to 25 medium sized boxes plus the typical furnishing of a 2 bedroom apartment, such as a dining table, 2 seater sofa, double bed and washing machine.

You require a standard UK driving licence to drive a 3.5t Luton t-lift van.

7.5t Box Van with Tail Lift

If you are looking for space and comfort in a removals van, the 7.5t box van with tail lift is for you. A larger space means less trips, and a tail lift makes loading and unloading difficult items easy. Perfect for a 3 bedroom house move, this van can fit up to 40 medium sized boxes plus the typical furnishings of a 3 bed. This includes all of the living room, kitchen, bedroom and garden furniture. This van was made for moving house.

You require a category C1 UK driving licence to drive a 7.5t box van with tail lift.
